  1. Any member of the echinoderm class
  2. Ophiuroidea. A brittle star resembles a
  3. starfish, and has a small, central, rounded
  4. body and long, flexible, spiny arms used for
  5. walking. The small brittle-star Amphipholis
  6. squamata is greyish, about 4.5 cm/2 in
  7. across, and found on sea bottoms worldwide.
  8. It broods its young, and its arms can be
  9. luminous. About 2,000 species of
  10. brittle-stars and basket-stars, whose arms
  11. are tangled and root-like, are included in
  12. this group.
